Policy Pulse
Core inflation’s 2.5% YoY pace remains just above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, but the gap has narrowed sharply from the 3.1% level seen in August 2025. The central bank has repeatedly cited core inflation as a key metric for policy calibration.
Market Lens
Equities and Treasuries showed little movement after the release. The data’s alignment with forecasts left risk assets steady, while bond yields held near recent lows. Investors continue to monitor underlying components for signs of renewed price pressures.

January 2026: 2.5%

Data Source & Methodology
Figures are sourced from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and cross-verified with the Sigmanomics database[1]. Core inflation excludes volatile food and energy prices, providing a clearer view of underlying price trends. The YoY measure compares current prices to the same month a year earlier.
Chart Dynamics
February’s 2.5% core inflation print matched January’s level and fell below the 12-month average of 2.85%. The indicator has declined for five consecutive months since peaking at 3.1% in August and September 2025. This sustained moderation reflects easing price pressures across most core categories.
Compared to six months ago, the rate is down 0.6 percentage points. The last time core inflation was this low was in late 2021, underscoring the effectiveness of tighter monetary policy over the past year.
Core Inflation Rate YoY trend, March 2025 – February 2026
What This Chart Tells Us: The chart highlights a clear downward trajectory in core inflation since mid-2025. The steady decline signals that underlying price pressures are easing, with the indicator now at its lowest point in over four years. This trend supports the case for a stable policy environment barring unexpected shocks.
Forward Outlook
Scenario Analysis
Bullish (20–30%): Core inflation drops below 2.3% by mid-2026, driven by further declines in shelter and goods prices.
Base (50–60%): The rate hovers between 2.4% and 2.6% over the next quarter, with modest month-to-month variation.
Bearish (15–20%): A rebound above 2.7% occurs if services inflation re-accelerates or supply chain disruptions return.
Risks and Catalysts
Upside risks include persistent shelter costs and potential wage growth acceleration. Downside risks stem from continued goods deflation and weaker consumer demand. The balance of risks currently favors stability, but vigilance remains warranted.
Closing Thoughts
Market Lens
Financial markets registered little surprise as the core inflation rate met expectations. The muted response reflects confidence in the disinflation trend and the Federal Reserve’s current stance. Investors will continue to scrutinize upcoming data for any deviation from this established path.

Analysis and Forecast
US Core Inflation Rate Holds Steady at 2.50 Percent The core inflation rate measures the change in prices for goods and services excluding food and energy, reflecting underlying inflation trends. For February 2026, the US core inflation rate remained steady at 2.50%, unchanged from January’s figure and matching market expectations. This represents a continuation of the downward trend from mid-2025 when the rate peaked above 3%. The data was released on March 11, 2026. Economists view this stability as a sign that inflation pressures are easing, supporting the Federal Reserve’s current monetary policy stance. According to Morgan Stanley’s chief economist, “The persistent moderation in core inflation suggests that the Fed’s tightening measures are effectively anchoring price expectations.” While the rate remains slightly above the Fed’s 2% target, the steady reading signals a sustained cooling in inflationary pressures across key sectors.
