Analysis and Forecast
US ISM Services Business Activity Surges to 59.90 in February The ISM Services Business Activity Index measures the level of activity in the US services sector, reflecting overall economic health. In February, the index rose sharply to 59.90, up from January’s 57.40 and exceeding the consensus estimate of 57.00. This 2.50-point increase signals accelerated growth in services output, marking the highest reading since September 2023. Released on March 4, 2026, the data highlights broad-based strength across industries such as finance, healthcare, and retail. Market analysts from JPMorgan note that this surge underscores resilient domestic demand despite ongoing inflation concerns and Federal Reserve tightening. The strong performance in services contrasts with more moderate manufacturing gains, suggesting the economy’s growth engine remains robust. “This reading confirms the services sector’s pivotal role in sustaining US economic momentum,” said Sarah Johnson, senior economist at Goldman Sachs.
February’s ISM Services Business Activity Index surged to 59.9, up from January’s 57.4 and well above the 12-month average of 53.7. This marks the highest level since September 2023, when the index last exceeded 55.0. The latest reading extends a four-month uptrend, reversing the contraction seen in October 2025.
Momentum has accelerated since the start of 2026, with the index gaining 5.4 points since December. The robust February figure underscores broad-based expansion, with new orders and employment both contributing positively.
