Investors interpreted the data as confirmation of a broad-based recovery, prompting a rotation into industrials and consumer discretionary names. The yen saw modest strengthening against the dollar, reflecting improved domestic fundamentals.
Foundational Indicators
Drivers This Month
Manufacturing output rebounded 2.1% MoM
Household spending rose 1.2% MoM
Service sector activity expanded for a fourth straight month
Policy Pulse
February’s Coincident Index reading of 116.8 exceeded both the prior month’s 114.3 and the consensus estimate of 114.5. The index has now climbed 2.5 points since December’s 114.3, highlighting a steady uptrend. The Bank of Japan has maintained its accommodative stance, but the latest data could prompt a reassessment if momentum persists.
Market Lens
Bond yields edged higher as traders priced in stronger growth prospects. The move reflects expectations for firmer demand and a possible recalibration of policy normalization timelines.
Chart Dynamics
February’s Coincident Index surged to 116.8, up from January’s 114.3 and well above the 12-month average of 114.7. This 2.5-point MoM gain marks the sharpest monthly increase since May 2022. The index has now posted three consecutive monthly advances, reversing the softness seen in late 2025.
Compared to November’s 114.6 and October’s 112.8, the current level reflects a clear acceleration in underlying activity. The last time the index reached this territory was in mid-2022, before global headwinds weighed on Japan’s recovery.
Coincident Index trend October 2025–February 2026
What This Chart Tells Us: The Coincident Index’s sharp February jump signals a decisive turn in Japan’s economic cycle. Sustained gains across manufacturing, retail, and services point to broad-based momentum. If this trajectory holds, it could set the stage for policy normalization and further market rotation into domestic cyclicals.
Forward Outlook
Scenario Analysis
Bullish (30–40%): Index sustains above 116, driven by export growth and consumer demand.
Base (45–55%): Index stabilizes near 115–117 as gains moderate but remain broad-based.
Bearish (15–25%): Index slips below 115 if external shocks or policy tightening emerge.
Risks and Catalysts
Upside risks include further improvement in global demand and continued fiscal support. Downside risks center on external volatility and potential yen appreciation. The Bank of Japan’s next moves will hinge on whether this momentum proves durable.
Data Source & Methodology
Figures are sourced from Japan’s Cabinet Office and cross-verified with the Sigmanomics database[1]. The Coincident Index aggregates industrial production, retail sales, labor market, and service sector data to provide a real-time snapshot of economic activity.
Closing Thoughts
Market Lens
Investors are recalibrating expectations for Japan’s growth trajectory. The Coincident Index’s February surge has injected fresh optimism, but sustainability will depend on both domestic and external factors. Japan Coincident Index Rises Sharply to 116.80 in February The Coincident Index measures Japan’s current economic activity by combining key indicators like production and sales. The index climbed to 116.80 in February, up from 114.30 in January and beating the estimate of 114.50, with the release dated March 9, 2026. This marks the strongest monthly increase since mid-2022, reflecting broad-based gains across manufacturing, retail, and services sectors. The rise suggests accelerating momentum in Japan’s economy, which could influence the Bank of Japan’s policy stance amid ongoing accommodative measures. Market reactions included gains in cyclical stocks and a modestly stronger yen. According to economist Hiroshi Tanaka of Nomura Securities, “This jump in the Coincident Index signals a meaningful recovery phase, reinforcing confidence in Japan’s growth outlook for the coming months.” The data highlights a positive shift after a period of subdued activity in late 2025.
