Consumer Confidence trend May 2025–February 2026
What This Chart Tells Us: The sharp climb in consumer confidence since mid-2025 highlights a decisive shift in Japanese household sentiment. The index’s break above 40.0 signals renewed optimism, with durable goods and employment expectations driving the uptrend. If sustained, this momentum could support stronger domestic consumption in the coming quarters.
Forward Outlook
Scenario Analysis
Bullish (30–40%): Index climbs above 42.0 by mid-2026, driven by wage growth and stable inflation.
Base (45–55%): Confidence stabilizes near 39–41 through Q2, with moderate gains in household spending.
Bearish (15–25%): Index slips back below 38.0 if global headwinds or domestic price pressures intensify.
Risks and Catalysts

Analysis and Forecast
Japan Consumer Confidence Rises to Highest Level Since 2022 The consumer confidence index measures how optimistic households feel about the economy and their financial situation. Japan’s index climbed to 40.00 in February 2026, rising from 37.90 in January and surpassing the estimate of 38.10. This represents a 2.10-point increase from the previous month and an 8.80-point gain compared to May 2025, with the data released on March 4, 2026. The sharp rise reflects growing optimism among Japanese consumers, driven by improved employment prospects and income expectations. Analysts at Morgan Stanley noted that this rebound could signal stronger domestic demand ahead, potentially influencing the Bank of Japan’s cautious monetary policy stance. “The sustained improvement in consumer sentiment suggests households are gaining confidence to increase spending, which may support economic growth in coming quarters,” said senior economist Keiko Tanaka of Nomura Securities.
February’s consumer confidence index hit 40.0, up from January’s 37.9 and well above the 12-month average of 34.6. This marks the highest reading since early 2022, with the index rising for a third consecutive month. The MoM increase of 2.1 points is the largest since December 2021, reflecting broad-based gains across all subcomponents.
Compared to October 2025’s 35.3, the index has advanced 4.7 points. The YoY improvement is even more pronounced, with February’s figure 8.8 points higher than May 2025’s 31.2. The steady upward trajectory since mid-2025 signals a sustained recovery in household sentiment.
